How does pausing service work?

You can pause your service with Standby Mode, which provides unlimited low-speed data for emergency messaging and easy reactivation in dead zones for a small monthly fee.

Important: Standby Mode is not intended for in-motion use.

Which plans support pausing?

You can pause with Standby Mode on all Roam, Residential, and Priority plans (excluding promotional offerings and select kit rentals).

Note: Business and Enterprise customers (excluding Aviation) can still pause their service lines without standby mode.

If I pause my service with Standby Mode and then resume, will I have to pay a demand surcharge?

Standby Mode does not waive demand surcharges. It only preserves prior eligibility.

If you already paid a demand surcharge for a specific location, you can pause and resume service in that same location without paying it again. If no surcharge has previously been paid for that location, one may apply when resuming service.

What happens if I want to resume high-speed service after pausing with Standby Mode, but my area is at capacity for Residential plans?

Pausing with Standby Mode does not reserve your spot on a Residential plan. If your area is at capacity when you try to resume, you may not be able to reactivate your previous Residential plan. However, you'll be able to resume service immediately on any plan available in your area.

Yes. As long as your Starlink terminal is plugged in and able to connect to the network, it will continue to receive software updates, regardless of whether your service is active, paused with Standby Mode, or even fully canceled. This ensures your hardware stays up to date and ready to perform whenever you choose to reconnect.

Important Notes:

  • Standby Mode, where available, offers speeds up to 500 Kbps download and upload.
  • You may resume service and change your plan at any time.
  • If you restart your service before your next billing cycle, you'll be charged your usual monthly fee.
  • Pausing service before the end of your current billing period allows you to receive service for the remainder of that period.
  • Upon resuming service, the monthly subscription fee is charged immediately, on a pro-rated basis.
  • Starlink subscriptions billing is tied to UTC time; changes must be made before 12:00 AM UTC on your billing day. Changes made after midnight will be delayed until the next billing day.
  • Data blocks purchased before pausing will not roll over upon reactivation.
  • Standby Mode does not include high-speed or overage data. You can un-pause and resume service for high-speed plans.
  • Standby Mode is not available for select rental customers.
  • Standby Mode is not intended for constant, maritime, or high-bandwidth use. Customers pausing with Standby Mode for more than 12 consecutive months may, at Starlink’s discretion, (i) be required to pay a fee or upgrade to a different Service plan, or (ii) be only able to connect to the internet to access their Starlink account.
  • Beginning in October 2025, select customers became eligible to receive $0 Starlink Mini kits that ship in Standby Mode for a small monthly fee.

Note: In August 2025, we upgraded pause to include Standby Mode. Previously, the pause feature offered zero data at no cost. That option is no longer available.

Pausing service with Standby Mode is not available in the following countries. In these locations, customers with Roam and Priority plans can continue to pause their service at no cost but will not receive any data while paused. Residential customers in these countries cannot pause.
